LASIK uses a laser to reshape the surface of your eye thus reducing or eliminating your dependency on prescription glasses or contact lenses. LASIK is FDA approved to treat myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. The procedure has achieved worldwide acceptance and the odds are you know someone who has undergone LASIK and loves their new vision without glasses or contacts. LASIK takes approximately 20 minutes for both eyes and you typically have good enough vision to drive the next day without glasses or contacts.
LASIK is the procedure eye doctors are having performed on their own eyes. Recently, Empire Eye and Laser Center’s own Dr. Joseph Chang, his wife Kathy, and our employees Michelle and Victoria have all undergone LASIK and have also achieved better than 20/20 vision.

Empire Eye and Laser Center was the first center in Kern County to treat patients with the new Wavefront guided custom laser by VISX. This state-of-the-art technology in laser vision correction uses custom Wavefront scanning to customize your LASIK treatment. Wavefront monitors the unique contours of your eye, allowing the potential for even better vision than you might have with your glasses and contact lenses. This new advancement in laser vision correction can treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism and is replacing older, more traditional laser technology.

PRK (Photoreactive Keratectomy)
The first refractive surgery procedure ever developed to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) involves the removal of the outermost layer of the cornea called the epithelium. Once the epithelium is removed, a computer-guided laser is used to reshape the cornea. Since the outermost layer of the cornea is removed for the procedure, PRK involves a longer healing period than LASIK. For those not eligible for LASIK, PRK is can be an effective laser vision correction treatment.

Used to replace clouded lenses during cataract surgery, multifocal intraocular lenses are an effective vision correction treatment that decreases or eliminates your dependency on prescription glasses. Unlike lens implants of the past that only provided normal vision for one distance, multifocal intraocular lenses allow you to focus on both distant and nearby objects. Now Empire Eye and Laser Center is implanting the newest multi-focal lenses: ReSTOR, ReZOOM, and the Crystalens.
